Barcelona-born bassist Manel Fortià displays all his compositional and performer talents on his new trio album “Despertar” (due out April 21st, 2022 via Segell Microscopi/Altafonte Distribution), a well-balanced reflection of two traditions: his Mediterranean and Spanish roots over the New York Modern Jazz rhythms.
“This album is very important to me because it reflects one of the most transcendent moments in my artistic life, when I was living in NYC. I feel that this experience changed my life and I think that I have grown a lot there” Fortià says. “Also it is the first time I record a full album with all my compositions and I can share that with two of my favorite musicians with whom I have a great connection personally and musically, it is like a dream”.
The Spanish title “Despertar” translates into “awakening”, which references the last tune of the album. In contrast, the first one is called “Dormir” (“fall sleep”). It is easy to deduce that between these tracks we are on a dreamy journey through experiences, traveling to different places and moments in a very imaginative way that brings about Mediterranean culture.
